Think back with me. What were you doing a year ago today? Where were you on your fitness journey? Take a few minutes just to remember what kind of place you were in physically, emotionally, spiritually, and relationally one year ago.
Today I want to just stop and breathe and celebrate the victories that God has already won in my life. I’m often so caught up in where I want to go that I forget how far I’ve come. It’s really important to take some time to intentionally reflect on and praise God for what He’s done in our lives. Let’s do that together today.
It is such a good thing to constantly be pressing forward, to constantly be chasing after the greater and greater things God has for our lives. But we will soon tire and burn out if we never take time to remember the big victories and the little victories. What were you really struggling with a year ago that isn’t even an issue anymore? Celebrate the big victories! What small steps have you taken in the areas of your health, your fitness, your relationship with God, your relations with others, your attitude, your finances, etc this past year? Those are victories too, and should be celebrated!
How can we celebrate? Have a private little dance party! Write down all the victories and put them up all over your house! Or maybe you want to start collecting some memory stones…
In Samuel 7:12, God gave His people a great victory in battle. After the battle was won, it says, “Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us.’”
What if you set up a stone to remember every victory God gives you? These can be physical rocks that you collect. Or they can be markers in your memory. However you decide to do it, start setting up memory stones to say, “Thus far the Lord has helped me.”
This past year, God has given me victory in my exercising. I work-out consistently, no matter how I feel, while a year ago, the smallest excuse could keep me from my work-out. Thus far the Lord has helped me.
That is one of my stones. What are your memory stones?
Remembering God’s past faithfulness gives us renewed strength in the present, as we press on towards future victories. It helps us remember that He has given us strength through hard times and difficult challenges in the past, and He will in the future! Whenever you get discouraged, and it seems impossible that your weight could ever change or that you can ever have a break-through with your eating, you can look back on these memory stones and say, “The same God that gave me victory over that is with me now, and will give me victory over this!”
