Ask, Seek, Find- How to Pray for Fitness

AskSeekFind Ask, Seek, Find How to Pray for Fitness

Happy June, loves! On this lovely Monday June morning, I’m sitting here with my laptop, thinking about the power of prayer and how it relates to our health and fitness journeys. This past year, God has answered so many prayers in my life, and He’s really changed the way I approach prayer. You see, I used to only pray for things that I thought I was supposed to pray for. I only prayed for the things I thought God wanted me to want, not the things I actually wanted. Now praying for things I know God wants is a very good thing. But the problem was that I wasn’t being real with God. I was putting up a facade in my prayers.

But God is my Heavenly Father. He looks on me with love and favor, and He knows everything that is in my heart. By not telling Him about the true desires of my heart, I was shutting Him out of many places inside, not allowing Him to work in me and on my behalf.

But last summer, I heard a pastor preach on these verses from Matthew. Jesus says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” -Matthew 7:7-8

Read those verses again. It’s a pretty astonishing statement isn’t it? Jesus doesn’t say ask and it might be given to you. He says ask and it will be given to you. The pastor said something that completely altered my thinking about prayer. He said, “I don’t want to get to Heaven and find out that I missed out on the greatest things God had for my life because I was too afraid to ask for them.”

Wow. A lot of the time, I’m afraid to ask God for what I truly desire because I’m afraid He won’t give it to me and then my faith will be challenged. But the thing is, I’m not putting my faith in the thing I’m asking for happening exactly like I ask for it. I’m putting my faith in my God who I trust to give me what I really need.

I felt God speaking to my heart, “Do you have enough courage to ask me for what you really want?” So I started to pray big and pray specifically. God started to show me that He delighted to answer specific prayers. And He answered some prayers that to me seemed way too specific and unimportant to deserve His attention. But that taught me so much about His character. Because nothing is beneath His notice. God is a God of detail. He delights in the smallest details of our lives! All you have to do is look at the painstaking details in the tiniest flower to know that this is the case.

He also has been answering some huge prayers. Prayers I thought were asking too much, and seemed impossible. And that taught me about God’s character. Nothing is too hard for Him. Jesus says, “Everything is possible for one who believes.” (Mark 9:23)

So today, I want to encourage you to start praying for what you really want, what your heart really desires. You don’t have to be afraid that you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. God wants us to bare our hearts to Him, and we can trust Him that if He doesn’t give us what we want, it’s because He has something better He wants to give us. But how can we open our hands to receive the greater things we can’t even imagine, if we won’t open our hearts to ask for the things we can imagine?

Getting super practical, here is an amazing way to start learning to pray this way. Get a journal to record your prayers. On every page, draw a line down the middle, dividing the page into 2 columns. Write your big, bold prayers and your specific, small prayers in the left column. Date every prayer. Leave the right column blank. This is the column where you will come back and record God’s answers to your prayers. Date every answer.

You will be amazed to read back through your journal and see how God delights to answer prayer! Just keeping a clear record like this has made me realize that He listens to and answers every prayer I pray. He doesn’t always answer it exactly as I thought He would, but it blows me away how many times He exceeds my requests! And sometimes His answer is no or not yet. But that is because there is something greater He’s preparing for me or that He’s doing in my heart.

What is it you’re afraid to pray for? Is there something you feel is too silly or too trivial to ask for? Bring it to Jesus. Is there something you feel is asking too much? Bring it to Jesus. Bring your specific weight loss goals to Jesus. They are not beneath His notice. Just bring it all to Jesus, and wait to be blown away by what He’ll teach you about Himself, how much He loves you, and how intimately He is involved in your life!

Memory Stones

memory stone Memory Stones

Think back with me. What were you doing a year ago today? Where were you on your fitness journey? Take a few minutes just to remember what kind of place you were in physically, emotionally, spiritually, and relationally one year ago.

Today I want to just stop and breathe and celebrate the victories that God has already won in my life. I’m often so caught up in where I want to go that I forget how far I’ve come. It’s really important to take some time to intentionally reflect on and praise God for what He’s done in our lives. Let’s do that together today.

It is such a good thing to constantly be pressing forward, to constantly be chasing after the greater and greater things God has for our lives. But we will soon tire and burn out if we never take time to remember the big victories and the little victories. What were you really struggling with a year ago that isn’t even an issue anymore? Celebrate the big victories! What small steps have you taken in the areas of your health, your fitness, your relationship with God, your relations with others, your attitude, your finances, etc this past year? Those are victories too, and should be celebrated!

How can we celebrate? Have a private little dance party! Write down all the victories and put them up all over your house! Or maybe you want to start collecting some memory stones…

In Samuel 7:12, God gave His people a great victory in battle. After the battle was won, it says, “Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us.’”

What if you set up a stone to remember every victory God gives you? These can be physical rocks that you collect. Or they can be markers in your memory. However you decide to do it, start setting up memory stones to say, “Thus far the Lord has helped me.”

This past year, God has given me victory in my exercising. I work-out consistently, no matter how I feel, while a year ago, the smallest excuse could keep me from my work-out. Thus far the Lord has helped me.

That is one of my stones. What are your memory stones?

Remembering God’s past faithfulness gives us renewed strength in the present, as we press on towards future victories. It helps us remember that He has given us strength through hard times and difficult challenges in the past, and He will in the future! Whenever you get discouraged, and it seems impossible that your weight could ever change or that you can ever have a break-through with your eating, you can look back on these memory stones and say, “The same God that gave me victory over that is with me now, and will give me victory over this!”

Body, Mind, & Soul Work Together

body mind soul Body, Mind, & Soul Work Together

I’m super passionate about how the body, mind, & soul all work together, but sometimes I need to remind myself that as well.

As I’ve mentioned in my FB posts, I’ve had an off week. I am not beating myself up & I know I am human, but I am trying to show you something that will help you so hear me out.

Between feeding my body too many foods that aren’t good for me, trying to adapt to a new schedule, not getting enough sleep, & not getting in more than one devotion time a day I’ve been completely jacked up feeling! But, I was thinking & it all started with one thing being off.

I wasn’t feeding my body properly, so it affected me mentally. Because of that I felt more sluggish & not as motivated, so I didn’t care so much about doing extra devotion time or going to bed early (just being real). Even though I know those things are so good for me!

But just that one thing derailed me & had a domino effect. If one is off balance, the others will be as well. And I know when my spiritual life is off & I’m not putting The Lord first, everything else gets thrown off. The body, mind, & soul work together.

And honoring God with my body by eating healthy & properly IS part of my relationship with Him. No wonder the Holy Spirit has felt uncomfortable within my body because I haven’t been taking care of it like I normally would!

Again, I know I’m human & I know we all make mistakes. That’s what we learn from & that’s what I’m taking this last off week as; a lesson from God because He is my Father & is trying to show me I need to get myself together. The body, mind, & soul work together.

I just wanted to share this with y’all & be transparent about my struggles in hopes that it’ll help someone else. These were never things I understood before when I was 60 lbs heavier & not living for The Lord. But I’m thankful for my struggles because they make me stronger & most importantly it’s my testimony to share to help others. The body, mind, & soul work together.

If you ever have a prayer request or need help with something, don’t hesitate to email me or message me on Facebook!

Strive for Progress Not Perfection

progress Strive for Progress Not Perfection
As I mentioned the other day on Facebook, I had  an off week last week with my eating. I had some left over snacks from a girls night at my apartment that I wouldn’t normally keep here. I had a snack attack several nights this week & missed my workout yesterday. But, it’s all about progress not perfection. But instead of beating myself up, I focused on how far I’ve come & the healing God is giving me. If this would’ve been me just a few months ago, I would’ve been on my bathroom floor crying & probably with a spoon & a jar of cookie butter (it’s like crack, don’t buy it). Again, progress not perfection!

But this week I instead accepted the fact that I was human & celebrated the fact that it was only half a jar of peanut butter I consumed (that’s a lot I know, but I’m just being real). And I got right back to eating healthy on a Saturday out of all days! Strive for progress not perfection!

Normally I would’ve been like, “yeah I will wait till Monday it’s the weekend,” because I knew I had a lot planned with friends & stuff going on at church. But I instead made healthy choices being out the entire weekend. I feel almost back to normal!

I say all this to say that I’m not where I want to be (my abs have gone in to hiding after this week lol), but I sure as hell ain’t where I used to be! I’m not in fetal position with sweets, I’m sipping my Shakeology enjoying the sunshine instead.

So strive for progress, not perfection peeps! No more beating yourself up because I care about you!

Small Changes Make a Big Difference

small changes big difference Small Changes Make a Big Difference

Happy Monday loves! Today I wanted to talk about why small changes make a big difference. I totally used to be that person that would try to make a million changes at once. That just sets us up for failure. Take it one day at a time darling.

When you’re trying to incorporate any change in your life, don’t try to do it all at once because you’re going to get overwhelmed & set yourself up to fail. Make one change at a time & take it one day at a time. I used to always just want to be lazy on my rest day, but then I decided to start incorporating yoga in a couple weeks ago. Yesterday I also threw in a bike ride because the weather was beautiful! Small changes make a big difference. I decide to make the change to not lay on the couch on my rest day. Now I have made these changes in to a habit because small changes make a big difference.

So if you’re trying to lose weight, first start out by cutting your portions in half. Then in a couple weeks, add in a fruit or veggie at each meal & then after that start adding in exercise a few times a week. Adding in small changes overtime will create habits that turn in to a lifestyle change. Small changes make a big difference.

goals Small Changes Make a Big Difference

I encourage you today to write down all of your goals & the changes you’d like to make. Then pick out a couple of the things you wrote down & break them down. For example, if you want to lose 10 lbs break it down in to how many weeks that will take. A healthy weight loss goal is 2 lbs per week. So that would take approximately 5 weeks. So what do you need to do on a daily basis to achieve that goal? Start with nutrition. Cut your portions in half to start out.

Because small changes make a big difference.

You can do it, friend! I believe in you!

Please RT or share with anyone this may help or inspire!

As always, don’t forget to love yourself!

Xoxo,

Jess <3
